We are mid-July. The air is thick enough to chew. Sweat drips down spines. People burn. Yet, across the internet and dinner parties alike, a persistent myth refuses to evaporate with the morning dew: the idea that summer lightning-fast growth turns your thinning crown into a jungle.
It is a nice thought. Really.
But science suggests it is less a “combover” of truth and more of a bald lie.
How hair grows in seasons
Let’s strip the romance out of the follicle for a moment. Your hair is not a garden plant that thrives on sun and water. It is a complex biological structure following a strict, internal calendar.
According to board-certified dermatologist Elizabeth Houshmand of Dallas, the process is driven by biology, not by whether you are wearing sunglasses. The cycle has four stages. First, the anagen phase—active growth. Follicles here for two to eight years. Then catagen. The transitional hangover. Followed by telogen, the resting nap. And finally, exogen, where the hair leaves the party entirely.
So, where does the heat fit in?
Do studies show faster growth?
People want it to be true because sunlight equals life, right? Vitamin D boosts everything. Or so we tell ourselves.
Houshmand is quick to dismantle the “summer Vitamin D magic” argument. If you are severely deficient, yes, correcting it helps general health and maybe supports a treatment plan for hair loss. But if your levels are normal? Piling on more sun or supplements won’t magically spark thicker locks.
In short, extra sun is not the elixir you think it is.
So what does the data actually say about does summer hair grow faster?
Most of it points to the opposite conclusion.
What the old studies say
There is very little rigorous evidence here. We are talking about small sample sizes that wouldn’t impress a high school science fair.
Take the 1991 British Journal of Dermatology study. Small, limited scope. It tracked men’s scalp hair. It found the highest rate of growth in March, not June or July. The follicles slipped into growth mode early in the spring, peaked in late spring, and hit a trough in September.
That same 1991 study did note one outlier: beard hair. Beard growth surged. It peaked in the summer, specifically July, with a reported 60 percent increase over winter levels.
Sounds amazing, until you do the math.
How much extra length are we talking about?
Let’s look at the beard metric again. A 60 percent increase sounds dramatic on paper. On a face? Not so much.
It translates to roughly 0.3 inches of extra growth over an entire month. That is not noticeable to the naked eye. That is barely detectable when you’re brushing your own beard in bad lighting.
And the other studies? A 2009 study involving 823 women (larger, but still just one data point) corroborated the scalp reality. It confirmed that summer is when the most hair follicles are in the telogen resting phase.
Resting.
Not growing.
So, if your beard gets a tiny, microscopic boost and your scalp hair goes dormant during the hottest months of the year, the idea of seasonal acceleration falls flat. The science is patchy. The evidence is weak.
Why do people believe it?
Cognitive bias is a powerful thing.
We notice the humidity. We notice the sweat. We notice our frizzy, unmanageable hairballs. And we notice that in winter, things dry out and break. It’s easy to confuse survival with growth. Or perhaps the seasonal lull makes any regrowth seem significant.
There are biological reasons why you might think you see more hair. Pollutants change. The scalp barrier might act differently due to temperature changes or sweat. Circulation increases with heat. Houshmond notes that these factors can influence physiological processes.
But “can” is not “will.”
And “can” does not mean “grows 60% faster” on the head.
The real drivers of hair loss
If summer sun isn’t the culprit (or the savior), what is?
Genetics. Obviously. The big boss of hair destiny.
But beyond the DNA lottery, stress is a silent killer. Nutritional deficiencies? Silent partner. Illnesses? Major factor. Medications? Yes, often.
Specifically, things that shock the system push follicles into the shedding phase. A sudden weight loss. Surgery. Postpartum hormonal crashes. Iron deficiency. Thyroid disease. These events don’t just make you shed; they delay it. You lose the hair several months later.
This is why it’s so confusing. You have the baby in June. You’re eating better (hopefully) in July because of summer salads and sunlight. But you shed in September. The connection is invisible, except in retrospect.
Does moving to a sunny state help?
Let’s play the devil’s advocate for a second. If you live in Seattle and move to Phoenix. You get sun. You feel happier. Serotonin is up. Mood is boosted. All good things.
Could it reverse a receding hairline?
No.
The biological mechanisms that determine hair thickness and growth rate are internal. They are written in your cells long before you ever see a palm tree.

Houshmond puts it plainly. Environmental factors have limited reach. The sun might change the color of your skin, the texture of your keratin, maybe the amount of sebum your glands produce. It does not rewrite your genetic growth schedule.
The 60% beard boost remains an isolated fact, tucked away in a dusty dermatology journal, mostly relevant only to men growing out mustaches for the Fourth of July.
And honestly? Even with the extra inch over a year, your hairline will likely stay exactly where it was in March.
