Vannevar Bush: The Engineer Who Predicted the Web

Vannevar Bush was not just an engineer. He was a strategist with a long-range view of how knowledge moves. Born in Everett, Massachusetts, in 1890, he died in Belmont in 1974. His life spanned the gap between mechanical calculators and the digital age. He spent most of his career at MIT. Teaching there from 1919 to 1938, then again from 1955 until he died.

In the late twenties and thirties, Bush and his students built electronic analog computers. These machines solved differential equations. It was early work. But it showed a clear pattern. Bush did not just build devices. He built systems.

He helped found Raytheon Co. He served as president of the Carnegie Institute from 1939 to 1955. But his most significant work happened during World War II.

Organizing the Manhattan Project

In 1941, Bush became director of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development. This role put him at the center of the war effort. He helped organize the Manhattan Project. That was the massive undertaking to develop the atomic bomb.

But his impact went beyond the bomb. He pushed for government support of university-based scientific research. Before this, that support was fragmented. Bush’s agency changed the model. It paved the way for postwar federal funding.

This shift is why we have the modern research university system. It is why labs at MIT, Harvard, and Stanford receive federal grants. Bush saw that innovation needs infrastructure. He built that infrastructure.

The Seed of Hypertext

Bush also thought about how we store information. He described an information retrieval and annotation system. He called it the Memex.

This was a theoretical prototype. It did not exist in physical form. Yet it predicted the future. The concept became the basis for hypertext.

Hypertext is the foundation of the World Wide Web. Bush laid that groundwork. He imagined links between documents. He imagined a way to jump from one idea to another.

He was an adviser to President Franklin Roosevelt. In that capacity, he laid the groundwork for the National Science Foundation. Established in 1950. The NSF still funds basic research today.

Why Bush Matters Now

We often look for the inventor of the internet. It is rarely one person. But Bush’s conceptual work is key. He asked how knowledge should connect.

Students and researchers still use his models. When you click a link. When you cite a source. When you follow a thread of logic. You are using a structure Bush imagined.

His work at MIT in the twenties was mechanical. His work in the forties was administrative. His thinking in between was visionary. He bridged the gap.

He died in 1974. The web exploded shortly after. The pieces were already in place. We just lacked the power to execute them.
