You walk down the street. Pigeons strut. They flutter. They seem chaotic. But maybe the chaos is a feature not a bug. New research shows these birds refuse to settle into stable decision-making. They live “at the edge of chaos.”
This matters because pigeons help us understand learning itself. Researchers are using them to test a law over 100 years old. The Law of Effect. Edward Thorndike proposed it in 1898. Simple premise: get a reward repeat the behavior. Everyone knows this part.
Here is the twist though. Thorndike’s law implies rewards make behavior not just more frequent but consistent. Less variance. Same action. Same every time.
Scientists checked the frequency part constantly. They barely checked consistency. Until now. Edward A. Wasserman from the University of Iowa wanted answers. His lab has used pigeons for fifty years. Why? They are perfect models for this stuff.
There would be no reason not to expect the animals to converge on a single favorite.
So they tested it. Five colorful buttons. The pigeons needed to peck five times total. Any order. Any buttons. Then a treat appears. Logic suggests they should pick a winner. Find one button. Peck it five times. Easy. Routine. Stable.
The birds refused. They kept pecking in different patterns. Wild variety. No routine formed.
Wasserman calls them “utterly resistant to locking into anything stable.” They treat variability like spice. Not an error but a choice.
Maybe this is evolutionary. Cities change fast. Rigid routines fail in shifting environments. Being unpredictable might be the survival advantage. It keeps you ready for the new. The unknown. The sudden threat.
Wasserman thinks other animals might do this too. Uniformity isn’t always the goal. The brain might actually prefer option A today and option B tomorrow even if the reward is identical.
Aaron Blaisdell at UCLA wasn’t shocked by the findings. He works in psychology. He expects weirdness from biology. But he notes we still lack the neurological “why.” How does the brain decide to switch gears when staying the course works?
We don’t know yet. The mechanisms remain dark. Which means pigeons might be teaching us more about the mystery of mind than we ever intended. And they haven’t even told us everything yet. 🐦
