If IIT is correct, consciousness isn’t about replicating human-like intelligence, but about creating systems with maximal integrated information. This raises the possibility of artificial consciousness, though it also suggests that many existing AI systems, which lack the necessary complexity, are unlikely to become truly aware. The philosophical debate surrounding machine consciousness is therefore far from settled.

Ultimately, the study of consciousness reveals a humbling truth: we may never fully understand how subjective experience arises from objective reality.
